FAQ

Do I need a license to become a handyman?

To become an independent contractor in most states, you don't need to have a license (as opposed with a salaried worker). However, you still must meet certain requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • You should have a high school diploma, or a GED.
  • Complete a four-week course at a vocational school.
  • Complete a background check through your state's Department of Licensing.
  • Pay a $20 fee to register annually.

You will also need business licenses and workers' compensation insurance.

How often should I employ a handyman to help me?

It all depends on what your project is. For instance, if you need a simple fix-it job done, such as installing a light bulb, then you might only need to call one handyman per week. However, if there is a lot of remodeling involved, you could probably use several handymen over the course of the project.

Is it possible for a handyman to install new fixtures or appliances?

A handyman can certainly help you out with these types of projects. Before you start installing any appliance or fixture, make sure you have the right information.

Is it better to pay a handyman on an hourly basis or per-project basis?

It comes down to personal preference. Some people prefer paying by the hour to know exactly how much their handyman charges. Some prefer to pay for each project, even though they may be doing multiple jobs at once. Either way is fine.

Are handymen insured?

Yes! Yes. Many insurance companies cover liability claims that exceed $1 million for bodily injuries and property damage. Your insurance company will usually compensate you for any damages that occur during the project.

What can a handyman do to fix my leaky faucets

Although a handyman can handle minor repairs, he won't have the skills to complete major projects like wiring a house and installing custom cabinets. There are many things a handyman could do for minor home improvements.

How To

How do you replace a broken window?

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. Repairs should take about 30 minutes in this situation. You could end up causing more damage to your house if you don't know the best way to replace a damaged pane. This article contains some tips to help you replace a damaged window.

First, remove the old glass from its frame

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.

Second step: Clean the new glass

Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. Begin by pressing down on the outermost pane's lower edge with a screwdriver. Gently push down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue inserting the panes until the entire window is assembled. You can seal the spaces where the panes meet using a silicone caulk pistol.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will add strength to the window while also acting as spacers to keep the glass in place during the expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing material.

Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create a seal between the glass frame and the wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.

Let the caulking set overnight. Once the caulking is fully set, don't disturb it. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
