How To

How do I replace a damaged window?

One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. The task consists of repairing damage caused to the glass inside your house. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.

First step: Take the glass out of its frame

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. Next, remove the lock at the top of the lower section of your window frame. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.

Step 2: Clean the new glasses

Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe away any dirt from the surface of the glass. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push your pane back into its opening. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue inserting panes until all windows are assembled. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the area damaged

To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.

The fifth step is to seal the area.

After replacing the glass, you can apply silicone caulking along the perimeter edges to the window frame. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.

Let the caulking set overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
