How To

How do you replace a broken window?

It is one of the most commonly performed home improvements. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

To remove the old glass, you must first lift out the screws holding the windowpane in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.

Step 2: Clean the new glasses

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

Third step: Reinstall the new glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push the pane into the opening of the frame. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting the windows until they are all assembled. You can seal the spaces where the panes meet using a silicone caulk pistol.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

Before installing the new glass, make sure to inspect the area around any cracks. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

The fifth step is to seal the area.

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create a good seal between the glass and the surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Let the caulking set overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. You may crack the caulking by not waiting long enough.
