How To

How to replace a broken window

One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. Repairing damage to glass within your home is the task. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

To remove the old glass, you must first lift out the screws holding the windowpane in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean your new glass

Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe away any dirt from the surface of the glass. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push your pane back into its opening. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue inserting the panes until the entire window is assembled. You can seal the spaces where the panes meet using a silicone caulk pistol.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. If the break occurred near the corner of the window, install two small pieces of wood along each side of the hole. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
