How To
How to replace a broken window
One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. Repairing damage to glass within your home is the task. Repairs should take about 30 minutes in this situation. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.
First step: Remove the old glass from its frame
To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, move the window up slightly to remove it from the sill plate (the bar that runs below the floor). Finally, use a pry tool to carefully loosen the remaining screws until they pop out of their holes. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.
Second step: Clean the new glass
Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe away any dirt from the surface of the glass. To remove any dirt or other debris from the glass' surface, spray it with water and rub alcohol.
The third step is to reinstall the glass
Reattach the window panels to the frames. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push back the pane into place in the opening. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue inserting the windows until they are all assembled. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.
Fourth step: Repair the damage
Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. In the event that the hole is located near the corner of your window, place two small pieces on either side of it. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.
The fifth step is to seal the area.
Apply silicone caulking around the edges of the frame after the glass has been replaced. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. You can purchase silicone caulking at hardware stores or online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.
Allow the caulking to cure overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
